Everyone knows to change their oil, but did you know that your vehicle manufacturer recommends that you change your transmission fluid, how about the power steering fluid and brake fluid.  This is all detailed in your owners manual.

Did you know that by not changing your anti freeze you could cause the metal components of the engine to corrode from the inside.  Such as this freeze plug.

The cost of a coolant flush is $49.95, this freeze plug repair was over $700.00.  Flushing the system as recommended is a major savings over the vehicle’s life.

The cost of a transmission fluid service is $109.95, the cost to overhaul a transmission is over $1,000.00.  Three or four services over the life of the vehicle is still a savings.

These fluids may look clean at their recommended service interval.  That is because once they are dirty, it is too late.  The damage has already been done.

Your vehicles brake fluid should be the color of apple juice.  If the fluid is dark in color or even black it should be changed.  Even if the fluid is not dark in color it may be contaminated and should be changed periodically.  We have test equipment to check the composition of the fluid and its strength.  The reason brake fluid becomes dark is because moisture enters the system through tiny pores in brake hoses, caliper or wheel cylinder seals or the master cylinder.  This moisture reacts to the different materials in the brake system; iron calipers, steel lines, aluminum master cylinder, and the contaminated fluid starts to deteriorate the rubber seals and hoses.

Most vehicle manufacturers recommend changing brake fluid every 2-3 years.  We recommend 36 months to be consistent.  The cost of changing these fluids 3-4 times over the life of a vehicle is much less expensive than replacing brake calipers, wheel cylinders, master cylinders, or anti lock brake components.

Power steering fluid is alot like brake fluid. However, in some cars the fluid is red like transmission fluid.  If the fluid is dark in color it is contaminated and should be replaced.  Power steering fluid becomes contaminated when moisture enters the system. It then starts to deteriorate the seals in the rack and pinion, power steering pump, and the power steering hoses.   It is recommended you change the fluid every 36 months to prolong the life of the steering system.
